Guest speaker ready for next meeting

Ms Barnes realised she had a passion for writing when she wrote essays in high school.

The Australian born Ms Judy Barnes has worked in sales and has been a freelance writer for more than two decades for magazines.

She has also been involved with photography, script-writing for business, radio and television.

She is now a copy editor at a newspaper and writes the odd article here and there.

Ms Barnes realised she had a passion for writing when she wrote essays in high school.

From there, she continued writing when everyone else had already left the class. This lesson was always before lunch break and the teacher was not allowed to leave the classroom unlocked, so she had to wait for her to finish her writing. The high marks were worth it.

Ms Barnes runs an online writing course, although she is not taking on new students at the moment. This has proven very interesting as the best students are not the people she expected them to be.

Much of the information that went into the course was gleaned from taking notes from Writers 2000 speakers. Other vital information came from attending script-writing lectures.

When she was writing as a freelancer, people would ask her which books she had written. So, she wrote a non-fiction book titled ‘Deep Talk – death does not exist’. Copies will be available when she addresses Writers 2000 on April 30.

Ms Barnes also has a feature film waiting for funding. The late Mr Bill Russell asked her to write the film script from his book, ‘The Shield of Mashona’. Mr Russell was also a member of Writers 2000.

The April meeting will take place at the usual monthly venue of the Inyoni Creek Clubhouse at the Rand Aid Complex on the corner of Wordsworth and Modderfontein Roads. The meeting will start at 1.30pm for 2pm.
