Explosives brought to second-hand shop

Members of the community should rather phone the police than risk their own lives when they find explosives.

For the second time in one week explosive devices were reported to the Edenvale SAPS on Thursday.

Two explosive devices were taken to a second-hand goods shop in Edenvale on Wednesday.

The two devices, a 60mm mortar and an exploder (detonator), were discovered in a box of military memorabilia that was brought into the shop by a member of the public. Employees at the shop found the devices on Thursday morning while going through the box.

The store immediately contacted the Edenvale SAPS to report the two devices.

Once the SAPS bomb unit had arrived and an assessment of the devices had been completed, the mortar round and exploder were declared safe.

According to the SAPS, the bomb unit is responsible for the management and maintenance of a bomb disposal as these members have the correct training and are professionals.

Edenvale SAPS acting communications officer Warrant Officer Jean Olckers said that members of the community should rather phone the police than risk their own lives when they find explosives.

This is the second explosive find reported to the police in one week. The first occurred at a scrapyard in Edenvale, of which the owner also reported the device as soon as it was brought in.
