Young man reaches milestone

"He grew into a playful and happy child."

Turning 21 is a well-celebrated milestone for many people throughout various cultures across the globe.

It is an age that is connected to the entry of adulthood, and all the rights and responsibilities that go along with it.

For Joseph from the Little Eden, a registered non-profit organisation that cares for mentally impaired individuals, turning 21 is a milestone that calls for a momentous celebration.

Joseph suffers from Down Syndrome and is one of the 120 residents who are accommodated at Little Eden’s Elvira Rota Village in Bapsfontein.

“He enjoys helping out in the kitchen as he receives treats on Thursdays as a reward for helping out. He also loves his music therapy sessions and is part of the drumming group,” said public relations and communications officer, Ms Nichollette Muthige.

Joseph, who will be turning 21 soon, was abandoned in a veld as a newborn child. Once he was found, Joseph was treated at hospital for pneumonia and syphilis. He was taken to Little Eden by Boksburg Child Welfare when he was just six weeks old.

As Joseph grew older, he became able to mouth some words, imitate movements for some of the songs sung at the society and clap his hands.

“He grew into a playful and happy child,” said Ms Muthige.

As a young child, Joseph already showed signs of being stubborn with a strong character.

Although some milestones were delayed as a result of Down Syndrome, Joseph has grown into a wonderful young man.

“For Joseph, and many other residents, Little Eden is the only home they will ever know. It is, however, wonderful to see that Joseph is content and loved by all the care workers and staff who care for him at Little Eden,” said Ms Muthige.
