Rifle recovered following robbery

Police officers were patrolling when they spotted five men who had just robbed a foreign national of his cellular phone and a box of wine.

An R4 rifle was recovered following a shootout between the police and suspects along Cleveland and Main Reef roads on April 5.

The incident occurred shortly before 4pm.

The Cleveland SAPS spokesperson, Constable Mpho Mashakane, said police officers were patrolling when they spotted five men who had just robbed a foreign national of his cellular phone and a box of wine.

“When they saw the police officers, the men started firing towards them. The officers returned fire. Three suspects jumped into a white Mercedes Benz that was parked nearby, while two suspects fled on foot. One of those fleeing on foot dropped an R4 rifle and continued fleeing on foot,” said Const Mashakane.
