Benbow Park cleaned up

Residents say Benbow Park had become a threat rather than a place to relax.

Johannesburg City Parks and Zoo (JCPZ) blamed the latest rains and back-log for the overgrown vegetation at Benbow Park in Kensington.

Ms Jenny Moodley, the JCPZ’s marketing manager, made the statement in response to residents’ complaints that Benbow Park has become an eyesore.

The grass at Benbow Park has since been cut.

Local residents and the Jeppe Community Police Forum (JCPF) chairperson, Mr Zola Dambula, said the grass and trees had grown to an such an extent that criminals could hide themselves and their loot without anybody noticing.

“You could not sit here and enjoy the view of the suburb. There were a few break-ins reported in surrounding areas recently. It was clear that the suspects were using this park to monitor the neighbourhood before they hit. Now, as it has been cut, we hope there will be a difference,” he said.

Mrs Moodley thanked the residents for their patience and urged them to continue to call the Call Centre on 011 375-5555.

“The team from the JCPZ was deployed to Benbow Park to resolve the issue. The seasonal onslaught of complaints is currently being addressed and this has resulted in the JCPZ acquiring a backlog which will be resolved by May,” she said.
