How to survive a hijacking

Remain calm and instead listen to them and do exactly as told.

The Edenvale SAPS‘ acting spokesperson, Warrant Officer Jean Olckers, gave the following tips to Edenvale residents on how to survive a hijacking.

  •  Accept that you are going to lose your vehicle, do not try to negotiate.
  •  Do not challenge the hijacker. Remain calm and instead listen to them and do exactly as told.
  •  Surrender your vehicle. Property can be replaced, lives cannot be replaced.
  •  Hijackers will be nervous and on edge. Do not reach for anything or make sudden movements.
  •  Keep your hands visible at all times and do not throw away your keys.
  •  Do not lie to the hijacker. It will only aggravate them, which could lead to physical violence.
  •  Try remember as much information about the attack as possible. This include details about the hijacker’s appearance.
  •  Notify the police immediately. Try remember details of the getaway car, if there was one.
  •  Know the registration and how to describe your car.
  •  If you have a baby or pet in the back of the car, notify the attacker. They may not have noticed.
  •  Report stolen IDs, stop bank cards and cellular phone numbers if any of these were left in the car.

By following these instructions, drivers and passengers are less likely to be harmed during a hijacking and could survive.
