Hijackers target Avenues

"I lost absolutely every single thing".

For an elderly Edenvale woman and her friend, the fear of crime in the Edenvale Avenues became a reality when they were targeted by robbers on March 23.

The culprits took off with some of their possessions as well as a vehicle.

Ms Cathy Beukes (75) and her friend were visiting a friend’s house on Third Avenue in Edenvale and while they were waiting for the gate to be opened, they saw a white bakkie with no registration number approaching.

The bakkie’s had three occupants. Two of the men exited the bakkie, one wielding a hammer. The third man stayed inside the vehicle.

The two men approached the women and one took Ms Beukes’ cellular phone from around her neck and her car keys.

“I thought about throwing my keys into the garden so that they wouldn’t take my car, but I feared for my life,” she said.

“I asked him not to take them, but he did,” she said.

Their attackers then left.

Since the attack, Ms Beukes has opened a case at the Edenvale SAPS.

“Edenvale is getting out of hand, it’s hopelessly out of control,” she said.

The Edenvale SAPS station commander, Colonel Eddie Trollip, confirmed that the case is being investigated.
