Road not reinstated for three months

Ward councillor calls it a shoddy work.

Weather has been blamed for the road on Northumberland and Queen streets in Kensington not being reinstated for three months.

Ward 116 councillor, Clr Mike Spadino said late last year there was a water leak at the intersection.

He said Joburg Water (JW) replaced a valve and constructed a valve box.

JW’s external communications officer, Ms Eleanor Mavimbela, said her department informed the Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA) that the road had to be reinstated.

She said a burst water pipe has to be attended to within 24 hours after being reported, and if there is a need for the reinstatement of a road it has to be done within 24 hours.

“JW informed JRA after fixing the leak that reinstatement was required as the activity falls within their area of responsibility. Rain or inclement weather had an effect on the delay of this activity,” she said.

JRA operations manager in marketing and communication, Ms Bertha Peters-Scheepers, said the intersection would be reinstated by March 24.

“Our inspectors have confirmed that JW has repaired the leak and back-filled the excavation. JRA will ensure the road section is reinstated and that the rubble on the site has been removed,” she said.

Clr Spadino said this was shoddy work.

“This was reported three months ago. The leak was fixed but the road was left just like that. Rubble and cones were left on the road for so long. It seems there was a lack of communication between the two entities. It left an eyesore at one of the busiest business parts of our area,” Clr Spadino said.

Ms Peters-Scheepers said residents can report road and storm water problems on 0860 562 874 or hotline@jra.org.za

Ms Mavimbela said that to report any water problems, residents can call 011 375 5555.
