Residents take (cleaning) matters into their own hands

The strike caught residents off-guard and unprepared.

The three week long Pikitup strike has left residents desperate.

The strike caught residents off-guard and unprepared.

“Last year the entity had two strikes. However, this illegal strike that hit us in March is turning out to be a total disaster. My ward has become extremely filthy,” said the ward 66 councillor, Clr Carlos da Rocha.

Residents of ward 66 took matters into their own hands over the Easter long weekend by cleaning up.

Mr Lenny Botto, from 8th Avenue in Bezuidenhout Valley, rallied the residents on Monday morning for a clean up.

“It got so out of hand that some of my residents decided to take the cleaning up into their own hands. The grass was cut and a tree lying on the pavement was chopped up and removed by members of the community,” said Clr Da Rocha.

He thanked Mr Botto for inviting him to the community initiative.

“I thank him for taking up this initiative. Sometimes it’s great to see residents taking pride in their surroundings. I must also thank each and every one of the residents who became involved. By the time they were finished, the block looked beautiful ” said Clr Da Rocha.

He urged other residents to follow this example.

“I know there are some people out there who are already doing this, however, let us all make a small contribution towards a better, cleaner environment in our place of residence.”
