Shootout leads to arrest of two men

Men tried to hide in the shacks after the shootout with the police in Betrams.

Two men were arrested following a shootout with the police in Betrams after 9am on Wednesday last week.

Jeppe SAPS spokesperson, Warrant Officer Richard Munyayi said police officers were patrolling when they noticed six suspicious men sitting next to the corner of 1st Street and Gordon Road.

Both men who were arrested are 27 years old.

“When the police stopped next to them the men ran in different directions. One of the men got into an Audi that was parked nearby.

“The police officers chased the five that were running on foot. One of those men started shooting at the police,” W/O Munyayi said.

He said that the man and his accomplice ran into shacks on Ascort Road, where one of them was arrested.

“The Johannesburg K9 unit was called to the scene and was able to apprehend another man who was in possession of a pistol with six live rounds. The firearm’s serial number was filed off,” W/O Munyayi said.

He said the men were charged with attempted murder and possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition.
