Bruma Lake Park to open in May

One of the important features of the lake is the iconic bridge which has been standing since the 1980s.

The Bruma Lake Park is planned to be officially opened in May 2016.

“We started two weeks ago to plan for the official launch of the Bruma Lake Park, which will take place around May,” said City of Joburg communication specialist, Mr Nkosinathi Nkabinde.

The Bruma lake rehabilitation project started in June 2014.

“We had a tour and walkabout last week on Monday. Eighty per cent of the work has been completed and the constructors are just busy doing the final touch-ups.

“The date of the launch is not finalised yet – it will be confirmed as soon as the project is finished,” said Mr Nkabinde.

The project is a result of years of complaints from residents and businesses about the bad smell emanating from the lake.

The water was contaminated by washing powder, motor oil, sewage, litter and other debris flowing into the lake from the Jukskei River.

This resulted in a stench from the lake, which has since been eliminated.

The rehabilitation process was done in phases.

The first phase included draining the lake and drying the silt. The Jukskei River was diverted from the centre of the lake, giving way to the construction of the channel.

The second phase was landscaping. One of the important features of the lake is the iconic bridge which has been standing since the 1980s. It holds sentimental value for most of the residents.
