Don’t be a victim

Women and children need to know how to protect themselves.

In the troubled, often dangerous society in which we live today, it is paramount that people, especially women and children, know how to defend themselves.

To this end, the Greater Germiston Society for Child and Family Welfare is hosting a self-defence and awareness workshop.

The event takes place at the Edenvale Sports Centre, JP Bezuidenhout Park, 17th Avenue, Edenvale.

The workshop is being held in conjunction with the SAPS and is set to take place on April 9, from 9am to 2pm.

The practical side of the course will be presented by Capt Hennie Bouwer from the SAPS’s Provincial Operational Response Unit.

Guest speakers will also talk about different types of crimes and how to handle different situations.

“It is extremely important for women and children to be in a position to defend themselves in a dangerous situation,” said Barbara Bouwer, the director of Germiston Child Welfare.

“This workshop is for all women and children (10 years and older) who want to learn how to defend themselves and prevent life-threatening situations.”

Tickets are R100 per person, which will serve as fundraising for the society.

It is essential to book to secure your seat.

The workshop will cover ATM and internet safety, rape and domestic violence, and how to handle hijacking and robbery situations.

The second session will be practical and participants will be given demonstrations and the opportunity to practise various defence techniques.

“Germiston Child Welfare hopes this workshop will teach people how to keep themselves safe in the dangerous world we live in today, and empower people with the ability to defend themselves and the knowledge to feel safe,” said Ms Bouwer.
