Clubhouse contributes to crime

Youth use the club house as a drug house.

A dilapidated clubhouse at Hoffman Park in Bez Velly is turning into a drug den.

Jeppe Community Police Forum (JCPF) chairperson Mr Zola Dambula said this during his visit to the park last week.

“Children smoke dagga, drink liquor and use all sorts of drugs here when they are supposed to be in school. I have asked police to help me chase away the schoolchildren who use this place when they bunk school,” Mr Dambula said.

He said the vandalising of the property is making things easy for criminals.

“Electrical systems are vandalised now and again here. There is no lighting here, and to make things worse the trees make the place darker at night,” he said.

Mr Dambula said the property is becoming a waste and a cost to the ratepayers.

“The city should be organising activities for the youth. As we approach the Easter holidays there should be some activities here for the youngsters. It should not be used for criminal activities as is happening now,” he said.

He urged those who illegally use the clubhouse to stop doing so.

“You are not cheating your parents, only yourselves. You may not know it now, but you will soon. By spending your time here and not at school, your future will be affected in many ways. You are missing out on your schoolwork,” he said.

The EXPRESS forwarded an inquiry to Joburg City Parks with a request for comment on March 16. At the time of going to print, no comment had been received.
