19 arrested for excessive speeding

Two of the motorists were also charged with driving under the influence of alcohol.

A special speed law enforcement operation was conducted by members of the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department (EMPD) on Sunday, March 6.

The operation resulted in the arrest of 19 motorists.

The first operation for the day took place between 4am and 10am on the N3 highway southbound, at the Linksfield Road turnoff, which yielded 11 arrests.

Two of the motorists were also charged with driving under the influence of alcohol.

The N3 highway passing Linksfield Road is a 120km/h zone.

Excuses used by the motorists ranged from rushing home to sleep to being late for church, and also included motorists who were late for work or late to catch a plane.

One motorist was caught travelling at 177km/h, while two others were caught doing 174km/h.

The lowest speed recorded by those arrested was 161km/h.

All the arrested drivers were charged with reckless and negligent driving at the Bedfordview Police Station and are expected to appear in the Edenvale Magistrate’s Court soon.

They were all released after paying bail of R1 000 each.

During a second special operation on the N3 highway northbound, at the M2 split within the Geldenhuys interchange, eight more speedsters were arrested when caught doing speeds of between 142km/h and 201km/h.

The eight arrested drivers were charged at the Germiston Police Station for reckless and negligent driving.

They are expected to appear in the Germiston Magistrate’s Court soon.

They were all allowed to go home after posting bail of R1 000 each.
