Double murder, rape suspects to appear in court

One of the deceased, Mr Luzuko Kela, was a teacher at Westbury High School. The other couple was visiting from the Eastern Cape.

Three men arrested for the Rhodes Park double murder and rape will appear in court on March 30.

The men were arrested after 12 men allegedly attacked two couples who were relaxing at Rhodes Park on October 17 last year.

The Cleveland SAPS spokesperson, Constable Mpho Mashakane, said the two men were tied up and thrown into the lake while the partners were made to watch.

One woman was raped.

The crimes left the community up in arms.

Following the incident, the City of Johannesburg (CoJ) improved security at the park.

One of the deceased, Mr Luzuko Kela, was a teacher at Westbury High School. The other couple was visiting from the Eastern Cape.

The suspects were arrested in Yeoville and Pretoria.

Const Mashakane said the three suspects are still in police custody.

“We call on anyone with information that could lead to the arrest of the remaining suspects to call the investigating officer, Warrant Officer Bruce van der Schyff, on 082 651 7769. Alternatively, information can be reported to Crime Stop on 08600 10111,” said Const Mashakane.
