Solar lights donated to pupils

The Rotary International theme for the 2014-15 year was “Light up Rotary”.

Clubs were encouraged to use this theme to plan their year and events.

The District 9400 Rotary District Governor Ann, Ms Elaine Stathacopoulos, demonstrated this by raising money to purchase solar lights for people in impoverished areas. This was implemented throughout District 9400 and many children and elderly residents received solar lights throughout the year.

A representative of Mahindra South Africa proposed this idea to management and after testing and comparing costs to find a suitable lamp, the company donated R400 000 to purchase 5 000 lights to be given to matric students.

The project was executed in February where the lamps, pencil bags with stationary and writing books were handed out by the company and Rotary across the country.

The Edenvale Rotary Club chose Dowerglen High School as its beneficiary.

The club has been assisting the school, such as setting up plans for an interact group, in order to promote helping others.

A number of Mahindra representatives, including the company’s East Rand branch manager Gerry Leach and Edenvale Rotary Club’s President Brenda Lang, handed over the packs to the pupils.

The pupils were excited to received their packs and once charged, the lights provide eight hours of light.
