DA outraged with lack of haste

It is incomprehensible that people have to die for council to query its urgency.

The Democratic Alliance (DA) is outraged with the manner in which the Laurie Road Circle is being handled.

In a press statement, party representatives said Laurie Road has claimed “several lives over the past few years”, the most recent occurring last year when Ricky Jones was knocked off a bicycle and killed by a passing vehicle.

The metro was accused of “shabby and uncaring” treatment of the matter.

The ward 19 councillor, Clr Bill Rundle, posed questions in council to the MMC for this portfolio with regards to the project.

“The responses were unsatisfactory,” he said.

The Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality’s spokesperson, Mr Themba Gadebe, replied and said, “The contract lapsed at the end of December 2015.

“The construction of the circle was not completed. The communication regarding regular updates about the circle with Clr Heather Hart (ward 18) is still in place. New contractors have been appointed and the completion of the project is scheduled to commence this month,” said Mr Gadebe.
