Solar lamps to make studying easier

Over 70 lamps were donated to pupils

Bedfordview High School is well underway to delivering a 100 percent matric pass rate this year.

Addressing representatives from Bedfordview Rotary Club and Mahindra East Rand last Thursday, principal Mr Mpho Tshisudi said the school is committed to producing good quality education.

Rotary South Africa, in partnership with Mahindra Eastrand, visited the school to donate solar lamps to grade 12 pupils.

The organisation’s Mr Alan Rock said the project aims to give pupils an opportunity to study, even in the event of power outages.

“With these lamps, the pupils will be able to do their homework and prepare for exams, even if they don’t have electricity at home,” said Mr Rock.

Mr Tshisudi said the lamps will go a long way to helping the school achieve its goal.

“By virtue of us being in Bedfordview, people tend to assume that we are a rich school, which is not the case. We accommodate pupils from poor communities and informal settlements,” said Mr Tshisudi.

He said some of the pupils come from homes with no electricity.

Together with the lamps, the pupils were also handed stationery packs and novels with the lamps.

The Gauteng Department of Education has started work to renovate the school.

“The temporary structures built with asbestos will be removed and replaced with proper brick classes,” said Mr Tshisudi.

He said the school had also received tablet devices to help matric pupils with their exam preparation.

Mr Tshisudi also challenged members of the community to adopt pupils from the school.

“Usually, once our pupils have finished matric, they have no money to further their studies. So we need all hands on deck from the community and local business. We refused to produce the working poor, we need the community to help these children to get in, and stay in, universities after performing well in matric,” said Mr Tshisudi.
