#YourStory – Mam Kkanyisile a mother to many

Mam Khanyisile is a warm, soft-spoken person who has a deep passion for the welfare of children.

From being a business woman to becoming a mother figure to abandoned girls.

This is how Mam Khanyisile Motsa has been described, after she left her business to provide a safe home for girls in need.

Mam Khanyisile is a warm, soft-spoken person who has a deep passion for the welfare of children.

“I was a successful businesswoman, running my import and export company. I saw the need for a home after seeing the number of children in Berea and Hillbrow who were abandoned, commercially exploited and homeless,” said Mam Khanysile.

She said it became a constant concern to her and she felt the need to do something about the issue.

“Home of Hope creates an opportunity for sustained physical, educational and holistic well-being for exploited girls. It is also a place of solace for all the children in the surrounding community.

“We offer mercy, compassion and acceptance to sexually exploited, trafficked, orphaned and vulnerable girls, along with those who may be infected or affected by HIV and Aids. However dire their situation, we believe we can help them take control of their lives, if given the tools and guidance, and be integrated into society,” said Mam Khanyisile.

The home provides shelter, accommodation, education and rehabilitates sexually exploited children. The home currently houses 76 girls.

“Awareness is important to us. Increasing awareness of the plight of children on the street, in very poor homes and those in brothels, can make a difference.

“Safety is important on our streets and in our neighbourhoods. This means creating an environment where the pimps and drug-dealers no longer rule the streets. We work closely with the SAPS and other welfare organisations as part of our attempt to root out intimidation and abuse,” said Mam Khanyisile.

The home rehabilitates the girls to give them the quality of life which will help them get back into society.

“Rehabilitation programmes ensure that each child in our care receives an education and skills training, which will enable them to earn a living without being dependent on their exploiters for food and shelter. Through this, they can become self-supporting and contributing members of society,” said Mam Khanyisile.

Like any other home, challenges are always there.

The home needs shelter, stationery, clothes and other basics for the girls as the home depends on donations and fundraising. The home also tries to sustain itself by selling scented candles.

Mam Khanyisile said they always need help as the home depends on donations.

“When one has an opportunity to help someone and make a difference in their life, do it,” said Mam Khanyisile.

Anyone who is interested in assisting at the home can phone 011 614-0861 or 073 250 2086.
