JUST IN: Metro police uniform found in possession of men suspected of hijacking trucks

Men suspected of truck hijackings on various routes.

Three suspects were arrested and detained at the Edenvale Police Station this morning.

Officers were on patrol duty near McDonalds on Barbara Road when they spotted a suspicious vehicle.

The suspects, who were driving two cars, a gold and black Toyota Carolla, drove towards the parking lot when two of them tried to flee.

Sebenza SAPS Duty Officer Sergeant Sharon (Mahamba) Tsotsotso said the three suspects were apprehended. She said upon their arrest a firearm was found under one of the seats of the vehicle.

“The suspects were charged for the possession of an unlicensed firearm, possession of ammunition as well as possession of traffic officers’ uniform and impersonating officers,” she said.

Sgt (Mahamba) Tsotsotso said other tools and equipment were also found in the suspects’ vehicles.

She said the community is urged not to stop for unmarked vehicles which make use of blue lights, instead it should be reported to the police immediately.

“The suspects in custody are suspected of the truck hijackings that have been occurring on Zuurfontein, Kempton Park, the R21, the N3 and Olifantsfontein. A jamming device which jams the tracker when the trucks are hijacked was also found,” she said.

She said motorists should be alert when travelling these roads as the police suspect more groups may be involved.
