WATCH: EMS provides fire safety training

The settlements have experienced massive fires over the years and in most cases, the dwellers do not know how to handle fires.

Emergency Management Services trained 1 125 informal settlement dwellers on fire safety on February 3.

Residents from the Jumpas, Magologolo and Denver informal settlements were included in the training.

The unit, led by Obakeng Shuping, visited the settlement to conduct the training.

The settlements have experienced massive fires over the years and in most cases, the dwellers do not know how to handle fires.

The unit is responsible for public information and educating the community.

The unit was established to shift the services’ focus from reactive to proactive interventions.

The unit runs nine different education programmes focusing on community safety, with various target audiences to give the community a practical application on safety.

Mr Shuping was accompanied by Ms Innocent Shibambo from the Berea Fire Station, along with the Cleveland Community Police Forum’s chairperson, Ms Alison Roberts.

The resident were pleased with the training because they had the opportunity to ask questions. They also learnt how to prevent fire and how to make the settlement hazard free.

In addition, the residents also learnt what to do in the event of a fire.
