Licence renewals – what you need

Part of the reason residents get frustrated is that they usually don't have an idea as to what to bring when going to the department for renewals of drivers licenses.

Over the past weeks, the NEWS has been inundated with calls from Bedfordview residents airing their frustrations at the level of service delivery offered by the licensing department.

Among other concerns, residents complained that the amount of time they have to stand in the queue was too long and some felt that upon arrival, they were not even sure what documentation they needed to take with them.

The ward 20 councillor, Clr Jill Humphreys, said for car license disc renewals residents can use the drive through centre in Oriel.

“With all the right documentation, you should be out of there in under 10 minutes,” said Clr Humphreys.

She said part of the reason residents get frustrated is that they usually don’t have an idea as to what to bring when going to the department for renewals of drivers licenses.

She said drivers need to have a copy of their ID, four ID size photos and R280 in cash.

It takes about eight weeks for the card to be ready.

A resident, who did not want to be named, said the community should demand service delivery, but have consideration for the staff working at the department.

“Sometimes we complain about standing in a queue without understanding how under resourced some of these centres are. We take it out on the staff, who must of the time are doing their best to assist,” said the resident.
