JMPD officer shot during car chase

“At the corner of Highland and Protea streets, one suspect protruded through the window with an assault rifle and fired 11 shots."

A member of the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) was shot and injured during a car chase in Kensington on Sunday afternoon.

The Cleveland SAPS spokesperson, Constable Mpho Mashakane, said two officers were following a Toyota Fortuner that was hijacked at Eastgate earlier in the day. One of the suspects opened fire on the police officers.

“At the corner of Highland and Protea streets, one suspect protruded through the window with a rifle and fired 11 shots, aiming at the tyres. One of the bullets hit an officer in the ankle,” said Const Mashakane.

The officer was rushed to hospital where she is recovering.

Const Mashakane said the hijacked car was was found abandoned the corner of Burger and Park streets.
