Friends prepare for cleaning projects

A signed Certificate of Participation is also available for each student upon request.

The Friends of Horwood’s Farm’s monthly clean up is a good choice for a community project.

According to Mrs Sharon Lendrum-Frittelli, the project is well suited for students who are required to participate in community-based projects in the area.

“The work we carry out on the premises of our only officially recognised Heritage Site in Edenvale is suitable for any age group. Our youngest volunteer is four years old and our oldest member, Mr ‘Pop’ Duthie, will celebrate his 92nd birthday in June,” she said.

Mrs Lendrum-Frittelli said they are in desperate need of a broader base of volunteers and would like to urge parents to ensure that students complete the specified hours of community participation required by schools earlier in the year rather than later.

Volunteers meet at Horwood’s Farm at 9am on the second Saturday morning of each month, with the exception of July, when they participate in the Mandela Day Community Project – the date for which will be announced in due course.

“A specific area is identified where work is needed to be done and boards are placed at the entrance of the farm as well as the working area,” she said.

All volunteers wear green pinafores to ensure the group is easily identifiable.

If possible, take your own garden implements which must be clearly marked, plastic garden gloves, hats, a supply of sunscreen and a bottle of water.

Donations of black bags are welcome.

A signed Certificate of Participation is also available for each student upon request.

The project dates for 2016 are February 13, March 12, April 9, May 14, June 11, July – Mandela Day Participation, August – No clean up due to cold weather, September 10, October 8, November 12 and December – No clean up due annual vacation.

Should the proposed elections take place on any of the allocated dates, the project will be cancelled for that date/month.
