Police operation nets two suspects

"We will continue conducting similar operations to clamp down on crime."

Motorists have been warned to be vigilant and to stop driving recklessly.

The Sebenza SAPS, together with the EMPD, conducted an operation on January 15 along Zuurfontein Road in Chloorkop.

The Sebenza SAPS communications officer, Sergeant Sharon Mahamba-Tsotsotso, said the operation was conducted after three trucks were reported as stolen after being hijacked on Zuurfontein Road.

“In December, three cases of truck hijackings were reported at the station and all three allegedly took place at the same spot. Nine police stations from the cluster took part in the operation,” said Sgt Tsotsotso.

She said the operation was successful as they managed to confiscate two vehicles that were suspected to have been stolen and arrested two suspects. Eighteen traffic fines were also issued.

“We will continue conducting similar operations to clamp down on crime,” she said.

She advised truck companies to hire escorts to ensure the safety of their drivers and trucks, especially when they are transporting expensive goods.

“Companies must educate their drivers about the dangers of stopping on the road. Drivers must not stop for unmarked vehicles on the road,” said Sgt Tsotsotso.

She said the vehicles that are mostly used by criminals who pose as law enforcement officers are grey Polos and black BMWs.

She also advised motorists to always be cautious and to stop reckless driving as that is the main cause of road accidents.
