#YourStory: New organisation sets pets’ tails wagging

The most important thing is to speak out on behalf of animals.

The faces behind Tails and Whiskers speak for the animals as they cannot speak for themselves.

The organisation runs a charity shop in Edenvale and they collect unwanted goods to sell. They are solely dependent on donations from the community.

Their purpose is to collect necessities for animals like cats and dogs in need.

They also have beneficiaries which the proceeds are divided to.

The owner of the store, Ms Debbie Shelton, opened the organisation last year in November.

“I opened the shop purely out of a love for animals. They money we collect goes to the beneficiaries for food, sterilisation and care of unwanted animals,” said Ms Shelton.

One of the beneficiaries, Ms Lindie Lourens, said the animals need protection and as pet owners they are responsible for their well-being.

“If more children are educated about animals it would make a huge difference in the way we care for our animals,” she said.

A few of the other beneficiaries mentioned the importance of knowing how to care for certain pets and the responsibilities of being an owner.

“It is imperative to create awareness within communities in order for everyone to get involved and assist to save the animals,” said Ms Irma Teller.

Ms Shelton said their initiative does not need a face, the most important thing is to speak out on behalf of animals.

“There is no face behind Tails and Whiskers. We are a team working towards a better animal environment, without us helping where we can the animals would be lost,” she said. To assist the organisation visit their store on corner Van Riebeeck Avenue and 3rd Street Edenvale or call Renee on 082 850 8196.
