More spaces open for EMM bursary

The EMM’s Economic Development Department is responsible for the implementation and administration of the Community Bursary policy through a bursary committee, which is constituted by key internal departments.

In its efforts to empower young people with skills to become independent, the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality (EMM) has increased its bursary scheme intake from 464 to 810 per annum.

The EMM’s Economic Development Department is responsible for the implementation and administration of the Community Bursary policy through a bursary committee, which is constituted by key internal departments.

The EMM’s spokesperson, Mr Themba Gadebe, said every year in August/September, the bursary is advertised at all EMM Customer Care Centres, libraries, clinics and newspapers.

“The bursary committee considers and approves qualifications and faculties to be considered for allocation through the advice of internal and external stakeholders,” said Mr Gadebe.

He said the Economic Development Department had recently inherited the function of bursary administration from the Human Resources Department and not less than 400 bursaries are allocated annually.

“The bursary is funded through an internal funding allocation and skills levies from the local government SETA,” he said.

Bursaries are allocated to Ekurhuleni residents only and three of the learners who have been funded by the bursary so far come from Edenvale.
