UPDATE: Kensington man commits suicide at Gillooly’s Interchange

When paramedics arrived on scene they found the man had sustained multiple serious injuries when he landed on the N3 North carriageway.

Although the identity of the 48-year-old man who jumped to his death from the Gillooly’s Interchange bridge cannot be made public, on scene information suggested that he was a Kensington resident.

Spokesperson for the Ekurhuleni Disaster Management Service (DEMS), Mr William Ntladi, said his office received a call around 11:15am.

“When paramedics arrived on scene they found the man had sustained multiple serious injuries when he landed on the N3 North carriageway and he was pronounced dead,” said Mr Ntladi.

According to information on the scene, the man had allegedly threatened to commit suicide on previous occasions.

It is believed that the man drove to the area before parking his vehicle and walking onto the bridge, shortly before the incident occurred.

While emergency services investigated the scene, distraught family members waited in a car parked a distance from the scene.
