Woman pleads with SAPS to arrest husband’s killers

“Crime will alienate investors,” said the Chinese Community Police Forum chairperson.

A R100 000 reward has been offered for anyone who can help with information that can lead to the arrest of the suspect who raped an 85-year-old woman and killed her 63-year-old son.

The pair was killed during a house robbery on Fransquin Street in Malvern on December 7.

The Cleveland SAPS spokesperson, Constable Mpho Mashakane, said during the incident two men held the pair at gun point.

“They tied the woman up while pointing a firearm at her son. They ransacked the house and took the man to the family’s tuck shop, which is on the same premises as their house. He was later found in a pool of blood with a bullet wound to his head,” she said.

The Cleveland Community Police Forum (CCPF) chairperson, Ms Alison Roberts, urged the community to come forward with information.

The Chinese Community Forum chairperson, Mr NG Sin Su Hong, said violent crime in the country will alienate investors.

Mr Hong was speaking after the march against crime that was held in Malvern on Wednesday.

Scores of people were blowing whistles and distributing pamphlets, denouncing crime to people along the route.

The march started at the house where the incident took place and ended at the Cleveland SAPS.

Mr Hong said the number of violent crimes against people of Chinese origin is increasing.

“Most of these people are business people who are investing a lot of money into the economy of this country. Government has to strengthen the fight against crime or risk losing huge investors,” he said.

Mr Hong said investors do not like to invest in a country where there are high levels of crime.

The emotional wife of the deceased pleaded with the police to find and arrest the culprits.

The sobbing woman could not control herself as she was talking to the management of the Cleveland SAPS.

Ms Shue Chee, a resident from Cyrildene, said it was a shame and unacceptable that there are people who inflict pain on others.

“My heart is sore that we are subjected to this crime. It’s a shame,” said Ms Chee.

After receiving the memorandum from the marchers, the Cleveland SAPS acting station commander, Colonel Nkosinathi Miya, said the memorandum will receive the attention of senior officers of the SAPS.

“I receive this memorandum on behalf of the management of the Cleveland SAPS. We will further forward it to the higher authority of the SAPS,” he said.
