Keep your pets safe this festive season

If you are going away, book your animals in for lodging/boarding, or get a reliable pet sitter/house sitter.

The Edenvale SPCA puts animals first and is urging pet owners to keep their pets as safe as possible.

The kennel supervisor at the Edenvale SPCA, Ms Alison Strydom, said the festive season is a time of the year which is most dreaded.

“Lost and unclaimed strays fill up our kennels in no time. To prevent this from happening we encourage people to put their pets first. Pet owners should get responsible people to look after their pets and not leave pets alone without any proper care,” she said.

The Edenvale SPCA provided the following tips to help prevent pets from going missing or possibly sustaining injuries during the festive season:

  •  Do not leave your pets alone for long, consecutive hours.
  •  If you are going away, book your animals in for lodging/boarding, or get a reliable pet sitter/house sitter.
  •  When there are fireworks, keep your pets inside the house with you.
  •  If your pet is stressed due to the noise of fireworks, purchase calming tablets from your vet.
  •  If you know where fireworks are being lit, contact the SAPS because anyone lighting fireworks has to have a permit to do so.
