UPDATE: Woman (85) raped and son (63) murdered

Const Mashakane said the dog would not allow anyone close to its owner's body.

An 85-year-old woman was raped and her 63-year-old son was shot dead during a robbery in St Fransquin Street in Malvern yesterday.

The Cleveland SAPS spokesperson, Constable Mpho Mashakane, said two men, one armed with a firearm, held the pair at gunpoint.

“They tied the woman up, held the man at gunpoint and ransacked the house. After taking R1 400 and some groceries, they took the son to the family’s tuck shop, where he was later found in a pool of blood. The son’s body was being guarded by his dog,” said Const Mashakane.

Const Mashakane said the dog sat next to its owner for more than five hours, guarding its owner’s body.

The K9 Unit was called in to move the dog from the body of the owner.
Const Mashakane said paramedics declared the man dead at the scene.

The owner’s dog managed to escape the area in which it had been placed and returned to its owner’s body, interrupting the investigation.

Const Mashakane said the dog would not allow anyone close to its owner’s body.

A family member sustained minor injuries when he was bitten by the dog as he tried to remove it from the scene.

Const Mashakane said the SPCA was called in to remove the dog again, as the K9 Unit had left the scene.
Paramedics and the police had to abandoned their work at the scene until the SPCA could arrive and remove the dog.
“The businessman was found with a bullet wound to his head. He was certified dead at the scene by paramedics,” said Const Mashakane.

According to Const Mashakane, when medical treatment was administered to the elderly woman, it was discovered she had been raped. It is unclear exactly when the woman was raped.

Investigations are continuing.
