Donations towards charity often come from the corporate world, however an Edenvale domestic worker has shown any person can come to the aid of fellow community members.
Ms Agnes Zikhaw donated two wheelchairs to the Little Eden Home for the Care of Persons with Intellectual Disability recently.
Agnes started collecting plastic bottle tops last year and this ultimately resulted in her donation.
She said her employee Ms Noeleen Davel started the venture and she continued when she started collecting the bottle tops herself. Agnes said she spent many afternoons walking in the streets looking for bottle tops.
“My friends use to think I was mad. I had to lie and tell them I was collecting it to give clothing to less fortunate individuals. They asked for the clothes and I said no,” she said.
She said it was her first time being involved in an initiative like this.
After months of picking up bottle tops, Agnes donated the wheelchairs on Friday, November 6.
She said the initiative included inter-waste weighing the bottles tops and for every 150kgs you received one wheelchair.
Agnes said everyone should be part of this initiative to help those in need.
“I love helping people who cannot help themselves. More importantly, I am a mother and I feel for other children who do not have mothers,” said Agnes.
She said she is going to continue collecting bottle tops to donate more wheelchairs.
“I cannot explain how happy I am because I was able to do a good deed for someone else. When I am old one day I will also need help, that’s why I’m helping others,” said Agnes.
