Safety in the spotlight at BCPF meeting

During the meeting, another resident complained about the harassment motorists are subjected to by taxi drivers not respecting the rules of the road.

Although the war against crime is far from over, the level of crime in the area has shown a decrease.

The station commander for the Bedfordview SAPS said there were no incidents reported recently of follow home robberies from popular cafes in the area.

“It may still be early days but we are well on the way to winning the fight. The criminals are feeling the pressure and we will keep pushing until they leave the area,” said Col Shiburi.

During this month’s Bedfordview Community Policing Forum (BCPF) meeting, community members expressed happiness at the service received from the station’s sector vehicles.

A Sector 3 resident said, “I always see them patrolling the area and when they are called, they are there in a flash,” said the man.

During the meeting, another resident complained about the harassment motorists are subjected to by taxi drivers not respecting the rules of the road.

“They drive recklessly without consideration for oncoming traffic and they speed down the road as well. We call on the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department (EMPD) to assist,” she said.

The BCPF chairperson, Mr Gavin Henry, said when EMPD officers conduct operation on the road the taxis are nowhere to be seen.

“They drive well and obey the traffic rules. If only there was a way to get them [EMPD] to be in unmarked cars to catch those drivers breaking the law,” he said.

Residents were also updated on the safety measures to be introduced at entry/exit points to the area.

The ward 20 councillor, Clr Jill Humphreys, said the introduction of camera surveillance on the Van Buuren off and onramps is being investigated.

“The are meetings being held and once there is an update it will be forwarded to residents,” she said.
