Business robberies remain a concern for the Edenvale SAPS, especially after an armed robbery at Korean Motors on Van Riebeeck Avenue last week.
According to the Edenvale SAPS’ acting spokesperson, Lieutenant Colonel Robbie Roberts, about 11 to 15 suspects were involved and managed to rob the business of an undisclosed amount of money on November 17.
“The suspects assaulted staff members but no one was seriously injured,” he said.
He said the suspects fired one shot before fleeing the scene. No arrests have been made thus far, however investigations are being conducted.
Lt Col Roberts said business owners have to be alert at all times and report suspicious behaviour.
“Businesses should refrain from keeping large amounts of money on the premises. They should also make use of their security by having them assist with the opening and closing of businesses. It will create awareness as well as a diversion because suspects do not want to struggle when attempting a robbery or any other crime,” he said.
He said the majority of business robberies are from individuals pretending to be customers.
He said shop owners need to be more aware and consider access control in their stores.
“Access control may seem inconvenient for customers but it is a way of ensuring that your business does not become an easy target for criminal activity,” he said.
