City and Caxton in tourism partnership

JOBURG – The City of Johannesburg has endorsed a partnership with the Caxton Group.

The City of Johannesburg authorities are committed to partnerships with the private sector, the media and ordinary members of the community which bring benefits to the City and the public.

This project is but one of the many partnerships forged between the City and individuals committed to the aspiration of the Joburg 2040 strategy (GDS 2040). A document developed in consultation with the majority of Johannesburg’s residents from different sectors such as business organisations, academic institutions, sports organisations, social and religious organisations, as well as the ordinary community member.

This initiative, which is a partnership between the Caxton Group of newspapers and the City of Johannesburg, is valuable to all stakeholders as it seeks to create more awareness amongst locals of destination Joburg and the importance of tourism for the economic growth of the City’s tourism industry.

The partnership with the Caxton Group of newspapers, coordinated by the City’s Group City’s Communications and Marketing department, Economic Development (Tourism) and Citizen Relationship and Urban Management (CRUM), seeks to highlight the intrinsic value of partnerships and instil Johannesburg’s vision of becoming a better world-class African city through meaningful and effective partnerships.
The City has forged a number of partnerships with various stakeholders to expedite the vision and objectives contained in the Joburg 2040 strategy. These include, but are not limited to, strategic partnerships with academic institutions to rollout some of the Smart City programmes; and religious organisations for the Social Cohesion objective.

Some partners have come forward in the rollout of the Corridors of Freedom programme, which is designed to transform the spatial form of the metropolis. Doors remain open for constructive proposals and ideas which will assist to accelerate the implementation of identified projects along the corridors.

The main objective is to ensure that the City establishes partnerships that yield positive outcomes for all stakeholders.
Another project, which stands out in stimulating a strong partnership with communities is the Jozi@Work project. Through Jozi@Work, the City changed the way it does business to create a platform for co-production that is driven and built on the principle that those who use a service are well placed to play a meaningful role in its design. The City’s citizens must not be passive recipients of state planning and resource allocation. Through Jozi@Work, the City is hoping to turn job seekers into job creators.

The Executive Mayor Councillor Mpho Parks Tau says: “The Jozi@Work project speaks to our core objective of aiding socio-economic transformation in Johannesburg communities through partnerships and the shifting of mindsets to turn job seekers into job creators. Our aim is to create a culture where ordinary South Africans can do things for themselves and their City.”

The City hopes that this partnership will enhance the work being undertaken by both partners to bring about the vision of Johannesburg as a caring municipality

Joburg was named the number one tourist destination in the world by
roughguide.com for 2015, and the partnerships aim to build on this recognition and to promote Johannesburg to its own residents as a world-class tourist destination.
