Residents wait for clarity on street signage

"The problems encountered by the residents are largely from a service delivery perspective."

Despite the recent meeting between the Greenstone community and the Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA), there is still no clarity on who should install the street names and signs in the area.

At the meeting held in Modderfontein on October 31, the JRA indicated that developers committed to installing street names, as they wanted to establish a common look and feel for the suburb.

This commitment was partially met as only certain streets have signage.

The ward 32 councillor, Clr Bongani Nkomo, said there are a lot of problems encountered by residents because of the lack of signage.

“The problems encountered by the residents are largely from a service delivery perspective. For example, if Joburg Water would like to repair a burst pipe, the task of locating the affected area is a lot more challenging. Similarly, with an ambulance or a police van,” said Clr Nkomo.

He said other complaints that are in line with the JRA and developers, range from the demand for traffic calming measure due to speeding motorist in the area. This also makes it difficult for some residents to exit various estates and complexes.

Gothic Construction said they were not one of the property developers in that area and referred the NEWS to another company.

Mr Israel Mphohoni, a quantity surveyor at Gothic Construction said, “We are the main contractor at the Stoneridge Office Park, finishing off Building E in the same office park.”

The NEWS made several attempts to obtain comment from the two developers.

Inquiries and requests for comment were sent on November 10.

At the time of going to print, no comment had been received.
