Frustrations as water crisis deepens

The ward 20 councillor, Clr Jill Humphreys, said the elderly are unable to carry buckets of water from the water tankers back to their flats.

The well-being of senior citizens came under the spotlight as the water crisis deepened in Bedfordview.

The ward 20 councillor, Clr Jill Humphreys, said the elderly are unable to carry buckets of water from the water tankers back to their flats.

“There is also a burgeoning health hazard as toilets and bathrooms cannot be accessed to assist these people,” said Clr Humphreys.

Clr Humphreys said one of her concerns was that sewerage blockages are soon going to be an added health risk.

Bedfordview residents were told last week to brace themselves for the week ahead as the crisis deepened.

On Saturday morning, residents woke up to the news that Rand Water was unable to fill the Signal Hill and Malvern East reservoirs overnight.

Some of the water tankers brought in by the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality (EMM) were empty, leaving residents even more frustrated.

“This is frustrating for residents. I tell them where the tankers are and upon their arrival, there is nothing,” said Clr Humphreys.

On Saturday, Clr Humphreys said residents should prepare themselves for the week ahead.

“It is going to be challenging. I would love to tell you that it is all going to be fixed tomorrow. But it isn’t. I am more and more convinced there is something we are not being told. I’m told it will get worse before it gets better,” said Clr Humphreys.

At the time of going to print, most residents were still without water and there was no indication as to when it would be restored.
