SAPS clamps down on illegal land occupation

The operation was conducted after the SAPS received complaints from company owners in Sebenza about squatters who were using the unoccupied land.

Squatters have been warned to stop occupying unoccupied areas of land around the Sebenza area.

The Sebenza SAPS, together with the EMPD, JMPD and the Sebenza Community Police Forum (CPF), conducted Operation Fiyela on October 30.

The Sebenza SAPS communications officer, Sergeant Sharon Mahamba-Tsotsotso, said the operation was conducted after they received complaints from company owners in Sebenza about squatters who were using the unoccupied land.

Sgt Tsotsotso said the areas visited included the veld behind the Sebenza Police Station and the open land in Ingwe Road.

“During the operation, we arrested seven illegal immigrants, three people for possession of dagga and we confiscated stolen copper worth about R2 000. We believe the operation was a success because there have been no reports of business break-ins after the operation,”said Sgt Tsotsotso.

She said more operations have been planned for upcoming weeks.
