Ketani murder case – verdict expected soon

Const Malatji said the case started after a home owner discovered a letter under a carpet during home renovations.

A verdict is expected soon in the Betty Ketani murder case.

This is after both the state and defence teams presented closing arguments on October 15.

The Yeoville SAPS communications officer, Constable Thabo Malatji, said both parties are confident with their presentations.

“The state called more than 30 witnesses. Looking at the evidence presented, the state believes it has a strong case against the accused. On the other hand, the defence says there is not enough evidence to show guilt beyond reasonable doubt. So both parties are fervently waiting for the court to determine its verdict,” said Const Malatji.

Const Malatji said the case started after a home owner discovered a letter under a carpet during home renovations.

“He had bought that house. The owner was busy with renovations when he discovered the letter. The letter was a confession.

“It had details about the kidnapping and the murder of Betty Ketani and her burial more than 16 years ago. It also had names, identity numbers and addresses of the suspects. Police did follow ups and five men including the letter’s author were arrested. More evidence has came out since then. This includes the discovery of her remains, which were identified through DNA testing as that of Ms Ketani,” said Const Malatji.

He said two of the suspects were former police officers when the crime was committed. He said the two were later moved to private security companies.

Const Malatji said the court has not yet decided on a date to deliver its verdict.
