Live fish sold on the street

“We know we are not supposed to sell fish from the back of a bakkie and on the street like this, but this is the best we can do.”

Some Yeoville residents purchase fish next to the intersection of Rocky and Cavendish streets.

Sellers said they bought the fish in the morning from fishermen at the Vaal.

“The fishermen fish from the Vaal River and Little River and sell the fish at a bulk discount. We then sell to our customers at a reasonable price,” said Mr Paulos Mabasa, one of the sellers.

Water is poured over the fish to keep them alive.

“We want our customers to see that our fish is still fresh from the water,” he said.

Mr Mabasa said he knows what they are doing is illegal.

“We know we are not supposed to sell fish from the back of a bakkie and on the street like this, but this is the best we can do,” he said.

According to Mr Mabasa, they only sell when the fishermen tell them they have caught enough fish.

They were fished from Vaal River and Little River and sold on the streets of Yeoville.
