Five people arrested for excessive speeding

They were caught doing speeds of between 171 and 162km/h.

Five motorists and motorcycle riders caught speeding excessively were arrested and charged yesterday at the Bedfordview Police Station.

According to spokesperson for the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department (EMPD), Chief Superintendent Wilfred Kgasago, they were caught during a speed law enforcement conducted during 5:30am to 11am between the Barbara Road turnoff and the Edenvale Road bridge on the N12 highway.

The speed limit on this stretch of the freeway is 120km/h.

Chief Sup. Kgasago said they were caught doing speeds of between 171 and 162km/h.

“A 20-year-old Kawasaki motorcycle rider was clocked at 171km/h at 7:58am claiming that he was late for work. At 5:30am, a 35-year-old male driver in Mercedes Benz sedan was caught doing 168km/h advancing the reason that he was rushing to Randburg. The third speedster, a male of 42-year-old was nabbed at 10am on a Honda motorcycle and cited no reason for breaking the law. Late for work came up as a reason again when a 42-year-old male driver registered the speed of 164km/h in a BMW sedan. The fifth person arrested, a 21-year-old woman, was caught at 8:58am in a Fiat sedan when caught doing 162km/h,” he said.

He said they were charged with reckless and negligent driving and are expected to appear in the Germiston Magistrate’s Court soon.

They were all released on a R1,000 bail.
