Scouts train leaders

“These children are in grade 5. They are chosen by their schools. They are the top leaders who want to become prefects."

Scouts converged at the 1st Jan Smuts Scout Group for the 2015 Leadership Training Course (LTC) on October 17.

Troops Leader, Brendon Whelan, said it was the seventh time the troop held the LTC.

He said three schools in the area, Hurlyvale Primary School, Dunvegan Primary School and Edenglen Primary School sent 20 school children to attend.

“These children are in grade 5. They are chosen by their schools. They are the top leaders who want to become prefects. After the course we send the marking information back to the schools. The schools may use this information to select their prefects,” said Mr Whelan.

He said his troop is the only troop that run this in the country.

“Scouts is a youth movement. It is designed around leadership principles. There is no better organisation to do leadership training than Scouts,” he said.

Mr Whelan said those who want to join Scouts can log onto www.scouts.org.za or send an email to Whelan.brendon@gmail.com for more information.
