Edenvale stalwart remembered

Mr Shepherd said his grandfather also started the Edenvale Library and his name can be spotted in the new library.

A former ward councillor and engineer has been remembered for his work in Edenvale.

Mr Harold Seymour built many houses in the area and lived in Glendower Avenue, in a home he built for himself.

His grandson, Mr Clive Shepherd, said Mr Seymour lived in Dowerglen for most of his life.

“My grandfather built his home in Glendower, it was however demolished and rebuilt. His house should have been preserved as a heritage site,” said Mr Shepherd.

He said his grandfather was a community man and stood for uplifting the area.

According to Mr Shepherd, his grandfather was a man of many talents and was a resident for 20 years.

“He was a ward councillor for ward 2 in 1948 until the mid 50s. Because of his work, the Seymour Park was named in his honor,” he said.

Mr Shepherd said his grandfather also started the Edenvale Library and his name can be spotted in the new library.

“He always motivated me to be the best and to achieve academically. We shared a love for books and I wish he could see that my library is bigger than the one he owned,” he said.

Mr Seymour retired in 1969 in Margate.

“Sadly, after my grandfather retired he died in Margate in 1969. I will always be reminded of grandpa Sey and what he meant to the Edenvale community because of the park and and his other work,” said Mr Shepherd.
