Clr Tau improves security at Rhodes Park

Clr Tau called on a collaborative security plan to be immediately activated at Rhodes Park after the incident.

The City of Johannesburg (CoJ) will increase visibility of security officials at Rhodes Park.

The CoJ mayor, Clr Parks Tau, made the statement following the murder of two men and the rape of a woman at the park on Saturday, October 17.

The Cleveland SAPS communications officer, Constable Mpho Mashakane, said Mr Kela, his friend and their wives were attacked by 12 men.

Mr Kela and his friend were assaulted and thrown into the lake.

Their bodies were retrieved by police divers three hours later.

Clr Tau called on a collaborative security plan to be immediately activated at Rhodes Park after the incident.

In a statement, Clr Tau stated that an urgent mayoral committee meeting to make immediate decisions was called.

“We regret the loss of life during the attack and sent condolences to the families who lost their loved ones. A partnership among safety and security stakeholders will be initiated immediately to root out criminal elements in not only Rhodes Park, but also in other recreational facilities of the city,” said Clr Tau.

He said there will be increased visibility of safety officials at parks, which will be supported by weekly collaborative meetings.

Clr Tau said the patrol roster was being developed by stakeholders who include park rangers, the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD), the SAPS, local private security companies and the community police forums.

City Parks and Zoo has put up boards stating that the park will be open at 6am and closes at 6pm.
