Motorists should be considerate

"There used to be a stop sign at the intersection but it was removed. This could have created confusion for motorists."

Residents have called for traffic calming measures along Kloof Road, between Van Buuren and Van der Linde roads.

This comes after a three-car pile up last Friday.

The accident took place when a motorist driving along Arterial Road was turning into Kloof Road.

The ward 20 councillor, Clr Jill Humphreys, said trying to get onto the main road [Kloof] from the side roads could lead to someone flying over the bridge and onto the highway.

She said she has written to the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality’s (EMM) traffic department to investigate measures that will allow motorists from Arterial Road to join Kloof Road without struggling. “There used to be a stop sign at the intersection but it was removed. This could have created confusion for motorists. Also, part of the problem is motorists who fly up and down that part of Kloof Road like they are driving on the highway. As much as we need intervention from the city, people need to be responsible when on the road,” said Clr Humphreys.

Mr Edward Mathebula, a resident and motorist, said fellow motorists need to be considerate.

“For the past year I have been one voice with the people who called on the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department (EMPD) to be visible at the same road’s intersection with Talisman Avenue. People driving along Kloof Road drive through the stop street without even yielding and as a result, those trying to turn have to either take the risk of being in an accident or wait for the one motorist who will stop for them if they are lucky. We must not shift the responsibility; change should start with motorists themselves,” he said.

Another resident, who did not want to be named, said a stop sign at the intersection would cause traffic problems.

“The stop sign that was previously there used to cause major delays and traffic jams. This would affect Van Buuren Road, an already congested route during peak traffic. I trust the engineers will know what to do,” said the resident.

Clr Humphreys said the infrastructure needs to be upgraded as the suburb keeps growing in population.
