Jeppe Girls celebrate new astro turf

“Having our own astro will take the level of hockey to new heights at the school.”

The Jeppe High School for Girls’ new astro court was officially opened in September.

“Having our own astro will take the level of hockey to new heights at the school,” said Mr Dave Lincoln, who heads up sport strategy

“We will now be able to use the astro, which is the size of an indoor hockey court, for all our practice sessions while still playing our home matches on Jeppe Boys’ astro.”

The astro court will be used as a multipurpose facility, mostly as a hockey surface for practice sessions. It will also be used as a tennis court, for ball skills and small-sided games of soccer.

The school’s headmistress, Ms Dina Gonçalves, declared the astro open in the presence of three esteemed old girls, who were renowned for their skills on the hockey field.

They were Debbie Visagie nee Zeller, from the class of 1977 and a former Springbok, Kirsten Mackenzie nee Ravenscroft from the class of 1992 who played SA U/21, and Di Thompson nee Rowan from the class of 1971, who played for Southern Transvaal.

After a 6-a-side exhibition match played by Jeppe High School for Boys, the Jeppe Girls first team took on the school staff and coaches, ably assisted by Di Thompson.
