SAPS out to combat drug abuse

"The drugs confiscated during the arrests, made from October 1 to 11, are worth about R40 000."

The Edenvale SAPS has recently set out to combat the increase in drug abuse in the area.

According to the Edenvale SAPS’ acting spokesperson, Lieutenant Colonel Robbie Roberts, 20 drug arrests have been made since the beginning of October.

“The drugs confiscated during the arrests, made from October 1 to 11, are worth about R40 000. We encourage the community to come forward with information so that we can address the drug problem and prevent drug habits as a whole,” said Lt Col Roberts.

In addition, he said that on October 10, alert crime prevention officers spotted men close to a business and after investigations were conducted, it was found that their intentions were to conduct a business break-in.

“Five of the suspects were apprehended and have prior convictions of business robberies. One of the suspects who was convicted works for City Power,” he said.

Lt Col Roberts warned that businesses should ensure that their alarms systems are in full working condition and have back-up in case of power outages.

Another concern raised by Lt Col Roberts is theft out of motor vehicles.

He said that Greenstone Crescent is being targeted.

“Vehicle owners should please double check that they have locked their cars. Some forget to lock and even close the doors. If you lock your car feel, check that it is locked to eliminate any chances of being carjammed. If you lock the vehicle from a distance with the remote it can be jammed,” he warned.

He said the community also needs to be alert as theft of motor vehicles is also a concern.

“Cars targeted are include Volkswagen Polos, Golf, Mazda, bakkies and Toyota. Terrace and High roads, as well as the CBD and the Avenues, are hot-spots,” said Lt Col Roberts.

Lt Col Roberts thanked the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department (EMPD) as they recently held a combined operation where 12 people were arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol and four arrests were made for possession of drugs.
