Commissioner of forensics new SAPS boss

EMPD to announce new chief of police tomorrow.

Divisional Commissioner for Forensic Services at the SAPS, Lieutenant General Johannes Khomotso Phahlane has been appointed by President Jacob Zuma to act as the national police commissioner while General Riah Phiyega faces a commission of inquiry.

The announcement this afternoon followed Gen Phiyega’s suspension.

“Earlier today the President suspended Gen Phiyega pending the outcome of the Board of Inquiry into allegations of misconduct, her fitness to hold office and her capacity to execute official duties efficiently,” a statement from the Presidency reads.

Gen Phahlane obtained a police administration national diploma in 1992 and has since obtained certificates in management services as well as business management.

Prior to his appointment as head of forensic services, Lt Gen Phahlane was divisional commissioner responsible for personnel management for three years. He was has responsible for police basic training.

Ekurhuleni executive mayor, Clr Monday Gungubele is expected to also announce the new chief of police for Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department (EMPD) tomorrow morning during a press conference.

The EMPD has been without a chief of police since the departure of the previous chief Hlula Msimang last year.
