Thieves make off with R1-m in cash

One guard was shot in the upper body and was taken to a hospital in Alberton.

Over R1-million in cash was stolen when security guards were robbed along Van Buuren Road last Monday.

The Bedfordview SAPS spokesperson, Warrant Officer Mduduzi Nhlabathi, said the incident happened at about 7:30am.

He said security guards driving two cars transporting money between two companies were stopped by between five and seven suspects in a white bakkie.

“The suspects shot at the escorting car, a white VW Polo. The suspects then jumped out of their vehicle and went straight to the car carrying the cash. They took the money and sped off,” said W/O Nhlabathi.

One guard was shot in the upper body and was taken to a hospital in Alberton. At the time of going to press, his condition was not known.

The SAPS is investigating a case of armed robbery and attempted murder.
