Coucillor worried about pollution

"Some of the residents live with senior citizens who are frail. The constant smell from the stream is hazardous to them."

The ward 20 councillor, Clr Jill Humphreys, said she is concerned about the effect the pollution at Jukskei will have on residents living closest to the stream.

Clr Humphreys said she receives complaints on a nearly daily basis from residents in Morninghill.

“Some of the residents live with senior citizens who are frail. The constant smell from the stream is hazardous to them,” she said.

She said the Ecoli levels, in the portion of the river that passes through the suburb, are too high and she is concerned that drinking water might be compromised.

In July, environmental consultant Mr Paul Fairall, said he was going to institute a Mandamus Action against the City of Joburg (COJ).

He said, “I’m desperately trying to get people or organisations, ratepayers groups or even individuals to support my action against the CoJ and Joburg Water, unfortunately without much or any success.”

Mr Fairall said the cause of the pollution was raw sewage entering the storm water drain system stream in hijacked buildings in the Johannesburg CBD.

Clr Humphreys said officials from Joburg Water had been to the stream to test and investigate short term solutions.
